WHERE WE'VE GONE SO FAR...

As I approach two hundred unique waterfall sites on the blog here, I thot I'd take a minute (or thirty) and try to organize what I've been able to present so far. As you can see, there are a lot of hole to fill in, but I'm working at including as much information as possible and will updating this page regularily...

Firstly, though, I'd just like to take a minute and thank everyone who have agreed to allow their images to be used on this site, supplementing the views of these hidden gems in our province. Thank you for the support and encouragement and for spreading the word!! I appreciate it more than I can say, can only hope that 2015 has many new waterfalls to feature. To date, we have had nearly 150,000 unique visitors to the site, from all over the globe. Im grateful I have this platform to share my passion for the waterfalls of Nova Scotia with each of you, and continue working on a book (or a series of bi-county guides) to bring this to your bookshelf as well.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: from HALIFAX, take EXIT1A off HWY102, westwards onto HWY103. Follow this twinned highway 19km to Exit5. After exiting, turn left onto Hammonds Plains Rd (HWY213) and continue a further 2.4km, merging right onto St.Margarets Bay Rd (HWY3). Follow this road a short distance of 300m, turning left at the lights onto HWY333 (Peggys Cove Rd). Drive down Peggys Cove Rd for 850m and then turn left onto Old School Rd. Park alongside the side of this dirt road approximately 150m in.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: a short hike thru the woods will bring you down to the side of the East River. Here you will find a series of four separate cascades, each varying between 3 to 5 feet in total height. Locally used trails make walking alongside this brook fairly easy, but a lack of overstorey brings in a great deal of light, making this site best visited on a cloudy day for the best photographs.

DRIVING DIRECTINS: from BADDECK, at EXIT9, travel northeast (towards Sydney) along HWY105, the TransCanada Highway for 32km and turn right onto New Harris Rd, just before the Seal Island Bridge. (at the KOA Campgrounds). Follow this road for 2.1km and park off the right hand side of the road at the pull-off, just before the metal bridge over the brook.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: either follow the brook upstream to the falls, which will require some rock scrambling and stream crossings, which in the summer is quite pleasant, or follow the trail along the higher ridge above the brook on the left hand side of the brook. 

These falls are very popular, and in the summer you may find groups of Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and the like frolicking nearby, as the namesake for these falls, Camp Carter, is a popular Boy Scout camp in Cape Breton.

DRIVING DIRECTINS: from BADDECK, at EXIT9, travel northeast (towards Sydney) along HWY105, the TransCanada Highway for 32km and turn right onto New Harris Rd, just before the Seal Island Bridge. TRAIL DESCRIPTION: these falls run directly beneath the bridge, and feature a small canyon downstream with a further smaller cascade. Located next to Camp Carter Boy Scout camp, this is a lesser remarked upon waterfall than the more popular "Camp Carter Falls" which lie about 110 meters upstream. Approach can be tricky, a steep sided ravine wall with few trees for handholds can make these a fairly tricky set of falls to get to the base of. Even approaching from downstream, with any significant water in the brook, can be hazardous as the falls reach a choke point between the lowest cascade and the main fall.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: from BADDECK, at Exit9, follow HWY105, the TransCanada Highway, travel Northeast 20.4 km and watch for the falls on your right hand side, with a roadside pullout  just beyond.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: walk back the few meters towards the falls. A game trail will lead you down to the base of the falls, but you can view the full length of them from atop the ridge. Not the most outstanding falls in the province by any means, but a nice diversion before the climb up and over Kelly's Mountain.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: from BADDECK, at Exit9, follow HWY105, the TransCanada Highway, travel Northeast 21.5km and turn left onto HWY312 (signed for the Englishtown Ferry/Ingonish). Drive approximately 850m, watching for the falls high on the hill to your right. Park in the pulloff area there but do not block the private driveway. 

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: viewable from the roadside, these falls exit a manmade tunnel that flows from underneath the highway coming down from Kellys Mountain above. They drop about eight feet in a plunge and then continue in a lively cascade to disappear beneath HWY312. Another set of falls, Eagle Falls, is rumoured in the area, on the bay-side of the highway, although access is only thru private property and I have not ascertained their exact location yet. These falls, likewise, would only be accessible by crossing over private property, thus permission should be sought by the landowner before approaching closer for photographing.
