DIRECTIONS: from Truro, follow HWY31 1 (North River Road)
north from town. Follow this road 26.5km to Earltown, following
the curve of the highway to the left and continuing a further
1 2km to the community of The Falls. Turn right onto HWY256,
and drive 2km to Balmoral Mills Provincial Park.
Trail Description: located at the historic Balmoral Mill, the trails to
view the dam/falls is an improved pathway, with stairways down
to the base of the stream.
Originally built in 1 874 by Alexander McKay, Balmoral Grist Mill
is one of several mills that were located along Mathesons Brook.
The waterwheel here is mostly decorative, as the original mill
featured a water turbine. The wheel featured here is based on
the wheel of the saw mill that was located a few hundred meters
upstream from this site. This site was purchased by the Nova
Scotia government in 1966 and is now a musuem where visitors
can witness the mill in operation and purchase the oat flour
produced.
The museum is closed for repairs this year, 2012.
